Optimism Abounds For NY Apple Core Young Guns
2010-07-03
Riding the success of the Apple Core Empire team’s National Championship, the turnout for the New York Apple Core Young Guns 2010-2011 tryouts was not only tremendous, but highly competitive. The selection process for head coach Tom Carroll and assistant head coach Ron Scall was extremely demanding, especially given the quality of the players trying out for a spot on the Guns' roster. When all was said and done, both coaches felt that this is a team that will compete at the highest level of the CHA and hopefully beyond. The team has a great blend of both older and younger players, as well as some real size – something that has been lacking the past few seasons. The Guns boast 9 players 6 feet and taller.
Anchoring the defense will be returning players Ed Shinnick, Hunter O’Neill, Alex Shtarr and Artie Aymong. Newcomers Sean Duffy and Liam Pues will be counted on heavily as well. Up front, the Guns welcome back veterans Ryan Carroll, Joey Petrizzo, Michael Tsatskin, Pat Donahue, Matthew Scarpato, and John McCabe. Also returning to the front line this season after taking a season off is ’08-‘09 standout Jonathan Novak. The coaching staff will be looking for a big boost to the offensive production from rookies Preston Rogers, Mike Wojciechowski and Jonathan Kaszuba. Returning goaltender Jacob Smart and rookie Ron Sartena will be a formidable tandem in net.
The coaching staff feels that they have the blueprint to work with to attain the goal that they have set for the team….a berth at the Junior B Nationals, which would be a first for the program.
